While it would make me very happy indeed if the idea that I am reflecting on was only a "straw man" it is actually an argument I hear more and more. I recently returned from a conference where I heard that idea expressed from very smart, well intentioned and wonderful people.

I just performed a very brief Google search on the subject and immediately found several news articles with commentators and academics reflecting on this possibility. One example can be found on the Vancouver Sun at http://www.vancouversun.com/technology/virtual+world+replacing+real/2733895/story.html.

By the way, your "PS" comment is a bit of a straw man. It would only make sense if I argued against these new forms of communication. I actually find them enormously useful but I do encourage people to consider their limitations.Rabbi Ben Greenberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01036782668757199251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193568198958968989.post-47289900473947116072010-12-15T08:20:51.176-08:002010-12-15T08:20:51.176-08:00Isn't this something of an attack on a straw m...Isn't this something of an attack on a straw man? It's hard to find someone who would seriously argue that social media *replaces* real world contacts. What you will find are people who will argue that social media
(1) enhances weak social relationships (most people follow more "friends" on Facebook than people they actually keep in touch with regularly)
(2) allows geographically or socially isolated groups to join in virtual spaces for common purposes or interests
(3) rapidly spreads information (and noise) through social networks

PS I found this blog post through Twitter.Efraimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18364450885928114159noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193568198958968989.post-68753403705727978112010-10-31T13:39:23.061-07:002010-10-31T13:39:23.061-07:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Rabbi Ben Greenberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01036782668757199251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8193568198958968989.post-19123294073184405592010-10-31T02:01:50.247-07:002010-10-31T02:01:50.247-07:00This comment has been hidden from the blog.Aryeh A.
